With markets closed, the city of Ayodhya cheerless and shelterless looked like the sky without stars.

A society’s joy and stability depend on perceived righteous support; when that support is lost, even artha-activities fall silent.

Duties in tension

  • Economic/householder duties (trade, livelihood) vs overwhelming communal grief
  • Maintaining civic functioning vs emotional loyalty to the exiled righteous prince
Ethical theme
Rāja-dharma / sāmājika-sthairya
How it resolves
Unresolved; portrayal of societal paralysis

Contemplate the true āśraya as inner dharma/Īśvara rather than external supports; fosters vairāgya and steadiness.

Rasa
Karuna (compassion), with Shanta (peace)
Mood
Starless, unsupported, stilled

FAQs

Dharma is tied to societal stability: when rightful order is overturned, economic and communal life collapses, revealing how ethics and prosperity are interlinked.

Ayodhyā’s public spaces—especially markets—become inactive as grief and uncertainty spread after Rāma’s exile.

Rāma as ‘tārā’ (a guiding star) by implication: his absence makes the city feel directionless and unsupported.
