Sukta 23
ओता॒ आपः॑ कर्म॒ण्याऽमु॒ञ्चन्त्वि॒तः प्रणी॑तये । स॒द्यः कृ॑ण्व॒न्त्वेत॑वे
ótā ā́paḥ karmaṇy àm uñcantu itáḥ praṇī́taye | sadyáḥ kṛṇvantu étave
Woven-in are the Waters within the rite: let them from hence release (the ill) for leading forth; let them straightway make it to depart.
यह पानी पूजा में भी काम कर रहा है। अब यह बुराई को यहाँ से निकाल दे। जल्दी से उसे बाहर भेज दे।
Rishi: Atharvanic tradition (anonymous)
Devata: Āpas (Waters) as operative agents
Chandas: Anuṣṭubh-like (incantatory)
Primary: shanta
Secondary: vira
Sayana highlights ‘otāḥ’ as pervasion: waters are intrinsically bound into ritual action and therefore competent to unbind disease. ‘Release’ and ‘leading forth’ are technical: the waters loosen the grasp of affliction and conduct it away, with ‘sadyáḥ’ insisting on immediate therapeutic result.
To cause the waters, as ritually pervading agents, to loosen and expel disease/evil immediately from the patient or space.
General disease/evil influence; ritual impurity; ‘binding’ conditions (stuck pain, stagnation).
Waters are installed into the rite and commanded to loosen and lead the affliction out, immediately.
Śodhana and langhana logic via cleansing; relieving āma-like ‘stuckness’ through mobilization and elimination.
Hygienic cleansing + somatic cueing for letting-go; ritualized washing for anxiety/OCD relief when used carefully and non-compulsively.
bhaisajya
Affliction as a quasi-agent bound to the person/space.
Immediate loosening and banishment of illness/inauspiciousness through ritually empowered water.
Ritual weaving (installation) + imperative release + guided expulsion (praṇītaye) often enacted by pouring water outward beyond threshold.
Return of impurity; lingering ‘attached’ illness.
The Waters are ‘woven into’ the rite; from here they should release (the ill) for leading forth and make it depart immediately.
Healing is not only substance but integration: water must be ritually ‘threaded’ into action. The psyche learns to loosen its grip on pain/impurity and escort it out rather than fight it.
What is embedded in right action becomes effective; release is achieved by loosening and guiding, not by suppression alone.
Unknotting and release; ‘leading out’ intrusive sensations/thoughts.
svādhiṣṭhāna
Exhale-focused practice: inhale gently, exhale longer while imagining the affliction departing.
A lattice of clear water-light woven through the body; dark specks loosen and flow out through the feet into earth.
From constriction to spaciousness.
Chant 9–21 times while washing; conclude with a boundary gesture (hand sweeping from head to feet) and a final rinse.
Crisp imperatives: amuñcantu, kṛṇvantu—slight lift then release.
Mark the contrast: otāḥ (installed) → amuñcantu (release) → sadyaḥ (immediate).
Keep otāḥ long ō, Articulate nasal in amuñcantu, Do not elide sadyaḥ—keep the -dy- cluster clear
Clear, directive, not loud; synchronize with sprinkling/pouring.
Pair with a final disposal of water outside the boundary to complete ‘praṇītaye’ (leading forth).
21
Need to ‘clear’ a room after illness, conflict, or bad dreams; feeling energetically ‘stuck’.
After cleaning/bathing; before entering prayer space; during early symptoms while awaiting care.
Immediate sense of release and cleanliness; reduced anxiety; ritual closure.
If prone to compulsive washing, keep repetitions limited and intention-based; seek clinical support if symptoms persist.
