He, with good praise, he with the hymn-singer and the troop, brake Vala, the stony barrier, with his roar. Br̥haspati, begetter of oblation, crying aloud, drave forth the ruddy kine, lowing as they came.
Rishi: Bṛhaspati/Angiras-tradition

Sayana treats the Vala-myth as paradigmatic: Br̥haspati’s voiced brahman (rava) shatters obstruction (phaligam) and releases ‘cows’ as wealth/light. In Atharvanic application, Vala becomes any blockage—disease, confinement, social constraint—broken by correct praise and priestly company.
To break ‘Vala-like’ obstruction—binding disease, confinement, or hostile enclosure—and to release prosperity (cows/light).
Obstructive/encapsulating conditions (symbolic): chronic heaviness, constipation-like blockage, respiratory tightness, psychosomatic ‘stuckness’; also hostile binding construed as demonic.
Bhedana (breaking) + pramocana (release): vocal force + collective rite imagery to restore flow and bring out ‘nourishing cows’.
Kapha/āma-type obstruction; granthi (knots) metaphor; supportive to therapies aiming at srotas opening (swedana, dīpana—ritually mirrored).
Chronic stress ‘freeze’ response; functional somatic symptoms; recovery supported by breathwork, voice, social co-regulation.
bhaisajya
Obstruction personified as Vala/stone barrier; secondarily enemies who ‘enclose’ one’s fortune.
To break Vala-like obstruction (disease, confinement, hostile enclosure) and release prosperity/health resources.
Mythic analogic magic: reenact Vala-breaking through stuti + rava; ‘crying aloud’ as expulsive/awakening technique.
Binding spells, envy-based constriction, recurring misfortune that ‘locks’ outcomes.
Cattle/wealth, nourishment, restored household flow (food, milk, income).
With good praise and with the hymn-singer and troop, he broke Vala, the stony barrier, with his roar. Bṛhaspati, begetter of oblation, crying aloud, drove out the ruddy cows, lowing as they came.
When the mind is enclosed by a hard ‘stone’ of blockage (fear, inertia, illness, social constraint), coordinated forces—voice, community support, disciplined praise—can fracture the enclosure and release vitality (the ‘cows’ as life-resources).
Obstruction is often a closed system; liberation requires both force (rava) and right form (suṣṭubh), and the reward is the return of nourishment, wealth, and light.
Identify the ‘stone’ (rigidity) and apply voiced breath to soften and open it.
Maṇipūra (will/fire) supporting Viśuddha (voice)
Bhrāmarī-like humming or voiced exhale before recitation to embody rava; then chant steadily.
A cave-door cracking; warm red-gold cows (vitality) streaming into the chest/abdomen as breath returns.
From frozen enclosure to mobilized flow.
Recite in sets of 7 or 11; after each set, do one concrete ‘opening’ act (stretch chest, drink warm water, open window) to anchor pramocana.
Maintain RV udātta peaks on key verbs (ruroja, udājat) and names (bṛhaspati).
Mark clear caesura after gaṇena |; keep phaligam as two beats (pha-li-gam).
suṣṭubhā: retroflex ṣṭ cluster cleanly, ṛkvatā: vocalic ṛ, kani-kradat: articulate repeated k sounds, vāvaśatīḥ: long īḥ ending, avoid shortening
Forceful, resonant, slightly louder on raveṇa/ruroja to enact ‘breaking’.
For obstruction-removal, Atharvanic praxis favors audible recitation (śabda as ‘hammer’) rather than purely mental japa.
7
Feeling ‘stuck’—chronic delays, lingering illness, blocked opportunities, or oppressive household atmosphere.
Before beginning remedies, petitions, or major efforts; when obstacles feel ‘hard as stone’.
Renewed momentum, sense of opening, improved morale; culturally framed protection against binding influences.
Avoid vocal strain; if chanting loudly, keep breath supported and stop if dizzy.
