Sukta 2

Rishi: Atharvanic tradition (gaṇa/devasenā-propitiation section)

Devata: Deva-senā (divine hosts) and allied gaṇas (ghoṣiṇī-, keśinī- classes)

Chandas: Mixed/Anuṣṭubh-like cadence (prose-like enumerative namas style)

This sukta is a protective, appeasing litany that addresses roaming divine hosts (deva-senā) and their allied gaṇas through repeated namas, converting potentially harmful presences into guardians. It combines gaṇa-propitiation with Rudra-śānti tones—asking not to be harmed, to be encircled by protection, and to receive svasti (well-being) and abhaya (fearlessness). Its power lies in exhaustive respectful enumeration: by naming, honoring, and ritually acknowledging these forces, the hymn neutralizes their hostility and redirects them toward safeguarding the reciter’s space, body, and community.

Inside Sukta 2

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

Begins with appeasing address—repeated namas to classes of beings and powers, establishing respectful contact and non-hostility.

  2. What it asks

‘Harm us not; speak kindly over us; encompass us; avert ill; be not wroth; let us not come into conflict’—a direct petition for protection and pacification.

  3. Where its power lies

Asserts a sovereign, all-seeing reach that transcends distance and boundaries, capable of controlling liminal dangers (notably aquatic/serpentine threats) across directions.

  4. How it closes

Ends by saluting the deva-senā and allied gaṇas and explicitly requesting svasti and abhaya—welfare and fearlessness as the hymn’s sealed outcome.

Kind of hymn

Raksha/Apotropaic (Protective), with Devatā-gaṇa propitiation

What it is for

Pacification of potentially harmful gaṇas and fierce divinities; establishment of protective encirclement; acquisition of svasti and abhaya for people, dwelling, and livestock.

Who it is for

Householders, village protectors, purohitas/atharvan priests, and anyone seeking warding against unseen roaming forces, sudden fear, or divine/liminal affliction.

Also used as

  • Raksha (Apotropaic)
  • Bhaisajya (harm-aversion/śamana, especially Rudra-śānti)

The deity

A collective, mobile ‘army’ of divine or semi-divine beings—loud/clamorous bands (ghoṣiṇī), long-haired/liminal companies (keśinī), and related gaṇas—whose presence can be protective when honored, or dangerous when neglected; Rudra appears as the archetype of fierce power requiring pacification.

Powers of the deity

  • Roaming and surrounding (encircling) spaces and persons
  • Granting svasti (welfare), śānti (appeasement), and abhaya (fearlessness) when propitiated
  • Withdrawing harm, wrath, and conflict when addressed with proper homage
  • Directional and cosmic surveillance—no boundary or distance limits their reach when allied
  • Neutralizing serpentine/aquatic and other liminal dangers through sovereign oversight

Why the deity is called

To avert injury and hostility from roaming hosts and fierce powers, secure a protective perimeter around the household/settlement, and transform these gaṇas into a benevolent ‘divine army’ that bestows welfare and fearlessness.

The seer

  • Atharvanic tradition (anonymous/gaṇa-propitiation section; Śaunaka recension context)Atharvan. Rakṣā and śānti charms: pacifying fierce or unpredictable divine/liminal hosts (gaṇas), averting injury, establishing protective encirclement (paridhi), and securing communal welfare (svasti).

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 11.1 (adjacent śānti/rakṣā material in the same kanda)
  • AV 11.3 (neighboring protective/propitiatory sequences in the same thematic cluster)

Preparing for the rite

  • Clean the recitation space (sweeping; quieting loud activity) and sit facing east or north.
  • Perform ācamana and a brief sankalpa for svasti/abhaya and non-conflict with the invoked hosts.
  • If desired, mark a simple protective boundary (paridhi) around the seat/threshold with water or a line on the ground (optional, hymn-consistent though not required by the text).

The rite

  • Recite the sukta in a steady, enumerative cadence, keeping the ‘namas’ formulas clear and unbroken.
  • At pacification lines (e.g., ‘mā no hiṃsīḥ…’), gesture an encircling motion around self/household (pary-āvaraṇa) to embody ‘encompass us’.
  • Conclude with a final offering of respectful silence or a closing ‘svasti’ intention, mentally assigning the hosts to guardianship rather than wandering harmfully.

What it needs

  • None required by the sukta (text is primarily verbal/propitiatory).
  • Optional: water for ācamana and boundary-sprinkling; a lamp as a steadying presence.

When

Evening twilight, before sleep, at times of fear/inauspicious disturbance, or when entering a new/uncertain place; also suitable for periodic household protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

They are named classes of roaming divine/liminal hosts (gaṇas). The hymn treats them as powerful companies who can become protective when honored with respectful namas rather than feared as hostile presences.

Its dominant method is appeasement and reconciliation: repeated homage, requests for non-harm, and a shift from conflict to guardianship. The aim is to neutralize danger by converting roaming forces into allies.

No. The sukta is primarily verbal and works through invocation and pacification. If following common Atharvanic practice, simple water for purification or boundary-sprinkling can be added, but it is optional.
