Healing & Protection
Atharvaveda Kāṇḍa 1 presents a foundational Atharvanic repertoire of protection and healing, where consecrated speech (brahman) and purifying waters restore wholeness and drive back hostile forces. Across its four anuvākas, the hymns move from medhā-building and release from bonds to practical remedies for illness, misfortune, and demonic/sorcerous aggression. A strong apotropaic layer accompanies bhaiṣajya work: rakṣas, nirṛti, and death-bearing agencies are expelled while vitality, color, and stability are reinstalled. The kāṇḍa culminates in auspicious thriving (subhūti), using plants, waters, and gold-as-amulet to secure life, vigor, and social well-being.
4 anuvakas (sections) to explore.
Protection and restoration through consecrated speech and waters—building medhā, driving back hostile forces, and releasing bonds
Protective and restorative Atharvanic rites that remove blockage, illness, misfortune, and hostile aggression while installing stability and prosperity.
Apotropaic protection joined to bhaiṣajya healing: restoring bodily wholeness (color, skin, fever) while driving out rakṣas, sorcery, and death-bearing forces
Securing auspicious thriving (subhūti) through consecrated powers—brahman (mantra-force), purifying waters, sweetening plants, and gold-as-amulet—aimed at life, vitality, and social well-being.
It chiefly focuses on bhaiṣajya (healing) hymns—curing illness and restoring bodily wholeness—while closely pairing these cures with protective, rakṣas- and sorcery-expelling mantras.
They move from consecrated speech and waters that build medhā and release bonds, to removal of blockage and misfortune, then to healing joined with apotropaic expulsion of rakṣas and death-forces, and finally to installing subhūti (auspicious thriving) via waters, plants, and gold-amulets.
They function as ritually empowered media: waters purify and restore, plants ‘sweeten’ and heal the body, and gold serves as a protective amulet—together supporting long life, vitality, and social well-being.
