Atri (Ātreya) explicitly referenced (atrivat)
Mitra-Varuṇa
Triṣṭubh
Is mantra mein Mitra aur Varuna ko bulaya ja raha hai. Atri ka naam purana udaharan ke liye liya gaya hai. In dono devtaon ko yajya ke liye barhis par baithne ka nimantran hai. Soma peene ke liye kaha ja raha hai. Inke niyam aur dharma mazboot hai jo sab sambhal ke rakhte hain. Yeh shakti shanti banaye rakhti hai aur buri taakat ko rok deti hai. Yajya mein khush ho kar upaasak ka bhala karte hain.
Mantra 1
आ मित्रे वरुणे वयं गीर्भिर्जुहुमो अत्रिवत् । नि बर्हिषि सदतं सोमपीतये ॥
Hum Mitra aur Varun ko apni pukar se bula rahe hain, jaise Atri rishi ne bulaya tha. Aap dono hamare paas aake baitho. Soma peene ka time ho gaya hai.
Mantra 2
व्रतेन स्थो ध्रुवक्षेमा धर्मणा यातयज्जना । नि बर्हिषि सदतं सोमपीतये ॥
Apne vrat ke saath pakke raho, hilna nahi. Dharam ke hisaab se logon ko sahi rasta dikhao. Aap dono hamare paas aake baitho, Soma peene ke liye.
Mantra 3
मित्रश्च नो वरुणश्च जुषेतां यज्ञमिष्टये । नि बर्हिषि सदतां सोमपीतये ॥
Mitra aur Varun hamari puja mein khush hon. Hamari ichcha poori hon. Woh dono hamare paas aake baithen, Soma peene ke liye.
They are a paired form of the Ādityas who protect ṛta (cosmic and moral order). Mitra emphasizes harmony and right agreement, while Varuṇa emphasizes vast law, restraint, and moral sovereignty.
It recalls the authority of the seer Atri’s earlier invocations, implying that the present worship follows a proven, ṛṣi-sanctioned way of calling the gods to the sacrifice.
Barhis is the sacred grass seat prepared on the ritual ground. Inviting the gods to sit there and drink Soma is the formal act of welcoming them to accept the offering and participate in the yajña.
