Rishi: Atharvanic tradition
Devata: Nirṛti (and implicitly Bhūmi as the receiving/covering power)
Chandas: Mixed/prose-like Atharvanic anuṣṭubh tendency (long pādas; AV style)
Yeh mantra Nirriti se azaad hone ke liye hai. Nirriti badi musibat aur bimari laane wali shakti hai. Is mantra mein uski jagah pe offering di jaati hai. Nirriti ko Bhumi aur Nirriti dono roop mein bulaya jaata hai. Yeh iron ke phande tod deta hai aur insaan ko wapas zindagi mein laata hai. Agar marna likha ho, toh Yama aur pitron ke hawaale kar diya jaata hai.
Mantra 1
Yeh mantra bura taqat se azaadi deta hai. Tumhare darawane sthan par main havan karta hoon, taaki bandhe hue log chhoot jaayein. Log tumhe dharti kehte hain, lekin main jaanta hoon ki tum har taraf buri taakat ho.
Mantra 2
Hey shakti, tum havan saman se bhari ho jao. Yeh tumhara hissa hai jo humne rakha hai. In logon ko bura karam se aazaad kar do, swaha.
Mantra 3
Ab Nirriti, tum hamare paas se chali jao. Tum woh lohe ke bandhan aur faanse jo hamko jakde hain, unko tod kar alag kar do. Yama tumhe wapas mujhe de raha hai. Us Yama ko, maut ke devta ko, ham pranaam karte hain.
Mantra 4
Woh lohe ke bandhan aur lakdi ke phande mein phansa hua hai. Hazaron maut usko dabaye hain. Yama aur pitra logon ke saath milkar is aadmi ko upar le jao, sabse oopar swarg tak.
Nirṛti is the Atharvavedic power of misfortune and dissolution—what ‘binds’ a person into bad fate, illness, or death-pressure. The hymn compels her to depart and be absorbed/contained by Earth (Bhūmi).
Because the affliction is treated as a death-bond. The hymn both commands release and respectfully addresses Death’s jurisdiction so the patient can be ‘given back’—or, if not, be guided safely with Yama and the ancestors.
They are the strongest imagined fetters of calamity—deathlike constraints that feel unbreakable. Ritually they can be represented by a cord (and optionally an iron token) that is loosened or symbolically cut during recitation.
