caṃdracūḍamṛḍa dhūrjaṭe hara tryakṣa dakṣa śatataṃtuśātana | śāṃtaśāśvata śivāpate śiva tvāṃ natosmi natavāṃchitaprada
Sūrya (Ravi)
Tirtha: Kāśī-kṣetra (Śiva as bondage-cutter)
Type: kshetra
Listener: Śiva
Scene: A litany of Śiva’s names unfolds: moon-crested, compassionate Mṛḍa, matted-haired Dhūrjaṭi, Hara, three-eyed, skillful, destroyer of the hundred-threaded bondage; Śiva radiates timeless peace.
Śiva is both fierce (Hara) and benevolent (Mṛḍa), cutting the bonds of attachment and granting peace and liberation-oriented boons.
The hymn is embedded in the Kāśī Khaṇḍa, aligning Śiva’s praise with Kāśī’s promise of release from bondage.
No direct injunction; the devotional act modeled is repeated salutations and recitation of Śiva-nāma (divine epithets).
