Bala KandaPrakarana 320 Verses

Prakarana 3

eku chatru eku mukuṭa-maṇi saba baranani para jou | tulasī raghubara nāma ke barana birājata dou ||20||

Verse 43 (चौपाई)

When rightly understood, the Name and the Named are seen as equal; love moves between them, ever following the Lord. Name and Form are the Lord’s two modes for our apprehension; though He is beginningless and beyond speech, this truth is grasped by the wise. To call one greater and the other lesser is an offence; hearing the distinction of qualities, the saintly understand the matter. Form is perceived as dependent upon the Name; nor is true knowledge of Form possible without the Name. Without the Name one cannot recognize the distinctness of Form—like something lying in the palm, yet still not known. Let the Name be remembered even without seeing the Form: a special tenderness then arises in the heart. The course of Name and Form is an unspeakable tale; to understand it is bliss, yet it cannot be fully narrated. Between the formless and the manifest, the Name stands as a sure witness—an adept interpreter that awakens understanding of both.

rāma nāma manidīpa dharu jīha deharī dvāra | tulasī bhitara bāherahũ jaũ cāhasi ujiāra ||21||

nāma jīhaṁ japi jāgahiṁ jogī | birati birañci prapañca biyogī || brahma-sukhahi anubhavahiṁ anūpā | akatha anāmay nāma na rūpā || jānā cahahiṁ gūṛha gati jeū | nāma jīhaṁ japi jānahiṁ teū || sādhaka nāma japahiṁ laya lāeṁ | hohiṁ siddha animādika pāeṁ || japahiṁ nāmu jana ārata bhārī | miṭahiṁ kusaṅkaṭa hohiṁ sukhārī || rāma bhagata jaga cāri prakārā | sukṛtī cāriu anagha udārā || cahū catura kahuṁ nāmu adhārā | gyānī prabhūhi biseṣi piārā || cahuṁ juga cahuṁ śruti nā prabhāū | kali biseṣi nahiṁ āna upāū ||

Yogins keep wakeful by repeating the Name upon the tongue—detached like Brahmā himself, severed from the world’s entanglement. They taste the matchless bliss of Brahman: unspeakable, stainless—where there is neither name nor form. Those who would know that hidden, profound course—by repeating the Name upon the tongue, they too come to know it. Aspirants repeat the Name, fixing the mind in absorption; they become perfected, attaining even the powers beginning with minuteness. The grievously afflicted repeat the Name; evil crises are dispelled and they become happy. In the world the devotees of Rāma are of four kinds—each of the four is meritorious, faultless, and noble. For all four discerning types the Name is the support; and the knower is, in a special way, dear to the Lord. In all four ages and in all four Vedas the Name’s glory is proclaimed; yet in Kali it is pre-eminent—there is no other means.

sakala kāmanā hīna je rāma bhagati rasa līna | nāma su-prema piyūṣa hada tinhahuṁ kiye mana mīna ||22||

aguna saguna dui brahma sarūpā | akatha agādha anādi anūpā || moreṁ mata baṛa nāmu duhū teṁ | kie jehiṁ juga nija basa nija būteṁ || proṛhi sujana jani jānahĩ jana kī | kahuṁ pratīti prīti ruci mana kī || eku dārugata dekhi-a ekū | pāvaka sama juga brahma bibekū || ubhay agama juga sugama nāma teṁ | kaheuँ nāmu baṛa brahma rāma teṁ || byāpaku eku brahma abināsī | sata cetana dhana ānaṁda rāsī || asa prabhu hṛdayaṁ achata abikārī | sakala jīva jaga dīna dukhārī || nāma nirūpana nāma jatana teṁ | sou pragaṭata jimi mola ratana teṁ ||

The attributeless and the attribute-bearing—these are two modes of the one Brahman: unspeakable, unfathomable, beginningless, beyond compare. Yet in my judgment the Name is greater than both; for by its own power it has brought both aspects within its sway. Let not the mature and virtuous suppose this to be mere common talk: I speak what my heart’s faith, love, and relish have verified. As one sees fire latent in wood, so with discerning insight one recognizes the one Brahman in the pair (of nirguṇa and saguṇa). Both are inaccessible, yet through the Name both become easy of approach; therefore I have declared the Name—‘Rāma’—to be greater even than Brahman. That one, all-pervading, imperishable Brahman is Being itself, Consciousness itself, a treasury, a heap of bliss. Such a Lord abides in the heart, changeless; yet all creatures and the whole world are poor and afflicted. By expounding the Name and by disciplined practice of the Name, He becomes manifest—just as a gem reveals its lustre when rubbed upon the touchstone.

niragun teṃ ehi bhā̃ti baṛa nāma prabhāu apāra | kahaũ nāmu baṛa rāma teṃ nija bicāra anusāra ||23||

rāma bhagata hita nara tanu dhārī | sahi saṅkaṭa kiye sādhu sukhārī || nāmu sa-prema japata anāyāsā | bhagata hohiṃ muda maṅgala bāsā || rāma eka tāpasa tiya tārī | nāma koṭi khala kumati sudhārī || ṛṣi hita rāma suketu-sutā kī | sahita sena-suta kīnha bibākī || sahita doṣa dukha dāsa durāsā | dalai nāmu jimi rabi nisi nāsā || bhaṃjeu rāma āpu bhava cāpū | bhava-bhaya-bhañjana nāma pratāpū || daṇḍaka banu prabhu kīnha suhāvana | jana mana amita nāma kiye pāvana ||| nisi-cara nikara dale raghunaṃdana | nāmu sakala kali-kaluṣa nikaṃdana ||

For the welfare of His devotees, Rāma assumed a human form; enduring hardships, He made the saints glad. Whoever repeats the Name with love, without strain, the devotees come to dwell in joy and auspiciousness. Rāma redeemed even a single ascetic’s woman (Ahalyā); the Name has reformed countless wicked men of crooked mind. For the sages’ sake, Rāma—making the daughter of Suketu (Umā) and the son of Sena discerning—set forth true discrimination. Along with fault and sorrow and the servant’s evil hopes, the Name crushes them, as the sun destroys the night. Rāma Himself broke the bow of worldly becoming; the Name’s majesty shatters the fear of saṃsāra. The Lord made the Daṇḍaka forest fair; the boundless Name sanctified the hearts of the people. Raghunandana routed the hordes of night-rangers; the Name uproots the defilement of the Kali age.

sabarī gīdha su-sevakanī su-gati dīnhi raghunātha | nāma udhāre amita khala beda bidita guna gātha ||24||

rāma sukaṇṭha bibhīṣana doū | rākhē saraṇa jāni sabu koū || nāma garība anēka nēvājē | loka bēda bara birida birājē || rāma bhālu kapi kaṭaku baṭōrā | sētu hētu śramu kīnha na thōrā || nāmu lēta bhava-siṃdhu sukha āhīṃ | karahu bicāru sujana mana māhīṃ || rāma sakula rana rāvaṇu mārā | sīya sahita nija pura pagu dhārā || rājā rāmu avadha raja-dhānī | gāvata guna sura muni bara bānī || sēvaka sumirata nāmu sa-prītī | binu śrama prabala mōha dalu jītī || phirata sanēhaṁ magana sukha apanēṃ | nāma prasāda sōca nahiṃ sapanēṃ ||

Rama, and both Nilakantha (Śiva) and Vibhīṣaṇa besides—He kept them, knowing each to be under His refuge. The Name has uplifted countless poor and lowly souls; in folk-memory and in the Vedas its glorious pledge shines. Rama gathered bears and monkeys into an army, and for the bridge’s sake He did not begrudge even toil. Yet by but taking the Name, the ocean of becoming turns to ease—ponder this, O good men, within your hearts. Rama, in the dreadful war, slew Rāvaṇa, and with Sītā returned, setting His foot within His own city. King Rāma in Ayodhyā, the royal seat—His virtues are sung by gods and sages in exalted speech. The servant who lovingly remembers the Name, without strain, conquers the mighty host of delusion. He moves about, immersed in love and in his own inward happiness; by the Name’s grace, no care arises even in dream.

brahma rāma teṁ nāmu baṛa bara dāyaka bara dāni | rāmacarita sata koṭi mahaṁ liya mahesa jiyaṁ jāni ||25||

nāma prasāda sambhu abināsī | sāju amangala mangala rāsī || suka sanakādi siddha muni jogī | nāma prasāda brahma-sukha bhogī || nārada jāneu nāma pratāpū | jaga priya hari-hari hari priya āpū || nāmu japata prabhu kīnha prasādū | bhagata siromani bhe prahalādū || dhruvaṁ sagalāni japeu hari nāū̃ | pāyu acala anūpama ṭhāū̃ || sumiri pavanasuta pāvana nāmū | apane basa kari rākhe rāmū || apatu ajāmilu gaju ganikāū | bhe mukuta hari nāma prabhāū || kahauṁ kahām̐ lagi nāma baṛāī | rāmu na sakahiṁ nāma guna gāī ||

By the grace of the Name, Śambhu (Shiva) is imperishable; the Name is a ready store that turns ill-omen into an amassed auspiciousness. By the grace of the Name, Śuka, Sanaka and the rest, the Siddhas, sages, and yogis partake of the bliss of Brahman. Nārada has known the Name’s majesty: the world is dear to “Hari, Hari,” and Hari Himself is dear to the world through that Name. Chanting the Name, the Lord bestowed His favor; thus Prahlāda became the crest-jewel of devotees. Dhruva, by repeating Hari’s Name, attained an unmoving, incomparable station. Remembering the purifying Name, the son of the Wind (Hanumān) held Rāma under his own sway. Even the fallen—Ajāmila, the elephant, and the courtesan—were freed, such is the power of Hari’s Name. How far can I tell the Name’s greatness? Even Rāma is not able to sing the full measure of the Name’s virtues.

nāmu rāma ko kalpataru kali kalyāna nivāsu | jo sumirata bhayo bhāṅga teṁ tulasī tulasīdāsu ||26||

cahũ juga tīni kāla tihũ lokā | bhae nāma japi jīva bisokā || beda purāna santa mata ehū | sakala sukṛta phala rāma sanehū || dhyānu prathama juga makha-bidhi dūjẽ | dvāpara paritoṣata prabhu pūjẽ || kali kevala mala mūla malīnā | pāpa payonidhi jana mana mīnā || nāma kāmataru kāla karālā | sumirata samana sakala jaga jālā || rāma nāma kali abhimata dātā | hita paraloka loka pitu mātā || nahiṁ kali karama na bhagati bibekū | rāma nāma avalambana ekū || kālanemi kali kapaṭa nidhānū | nāma sumati samaratha hanumānū ||

Through the four ages, across the three divisions of time, and in all the three worlds, beings become free of sorrow by repeating the Name. The Vedas, the Purāṇas, and the doctrine of the saints agree in this: the fruit of every righteous deed is love for Rāma. In the first age meditation is the path; in the second, sacrifice by rule; in Dvāpara the Lord is pleased by worship. But Kali is wholly defiled, the very root of impurity—a sea of sin, wherein the minds of men move like fish. The Name is a wish-fulfilling tree; it subdues dreadful Time: by remembering it, the whole net of the world is cut and quieted. Rāma’s Name in Kali grants the heart’s desire—beneficent in this world and the next, as father and mother to the soul. In Kali there is neither the strength for works, nor discerning devotion; the one support is Rāma’s Name. Kali is a treasury of deceit, a Kālanemi; but the Name is right counsel, and Hanumān is the mighty power that makes it effective.

rāma nāma narakesarī kanakakasipu kalikāla | jāpaka jana prahalāda jimi pālihi dali surasāla ||27||

In fear or in ill-temper, in anger or even in sloth—whoever repeats the Name finds auspiciousness spread through the ten directions. Remembering that Name, singing the virtues of Ram, I bow my head to Raghunath. He will set me right in every way—His grace is such that it never fails nor is it ever diminished. Ram is the perfect Master, and I—an unworthy servant; yet, looking toward His own side, the Treasure of compassion will foster and sustain me. In the ways of the world and in the rule of the Vedas, a good lord recognizes love when he hears humble entreaty. Rich and poor, villager and townsman, learned and dull, stained and bright— Good poet or bad, according to one’s own wit—men and women alike still praise their king. A holy, wise, and well-mannered ruler—an embodiment of the Lord’s portion—becomes supremely merciful. Hearing, he honors all with gracious speech; thus my devotion, my bowing, and my inner course are understood. Such is the natural disposition of a simple earth-protector—know the crest-jewel, the King of Kosala. Ram is surely pleased by love alone; who in the world is more dull and tainted in mind than I?

Great indeed is my stubborn fault; hearing of such sin, even hell would wrinkle its nose in disgust. Yet, knowing me to be fearlessly familiar as one of His own, Rama never even in dream kept that offence in mind. Hearing me out and looking with pure eyes, my Lord praised the devotion and intent within me. As I spoke, my heart grew wholesome; Rama is pleased when He knows the mind of His servant. The Lord does not keep in His thought the record of a fault once done; rather He recalls—again and again—the love within the heart. That very ‘sin’ by which, like a hunter, He struck down Bali—again the blue-throated Lord (Shiva) made it into a crooked charge. But that same ‘deed’ concerning Vibhishana, Rama never even in dream regarded within His heart as blame. Thus, when He met Bharata with honor, Raghuvira proclaimed this in the royal assembly.

That pleasing tale which Yājñavalkya related to the sage Bharadvāja— I shall recount that very dialogue in due order. Hear it, all noble souls, and take it as a joy. Śambhu first fashioned this fair account, and then, in compassion, told it again to Umā. That same Śiva bestowed it upon Kākabhūśuṇḍi, discerning him to be a worthy devotee of Rāma. From him Yājñavalkya received it anew, and he in turn sang it forth to Bharadvāja. Such hearer and such speaker were alike in temper—lovers of the nectar of discourse—knowers of Hari’s divine play. They know the three times by their own insight, as plainly as an āmalaka fruit set upon the palm. And other wise devotees of Hari too speak, hear, and understand it in manifold ways.
