भयानकं सुखपरं गर्भे च करुणो रसः अद्भुतो ऽन्ते सुकॢप्तार्थो नोदात्ता सा कथानिका

bhayānakaṃ sukhaparaṃ garbhe ca karuṇo rasaḥ adbhuto 'nte sukḷptārtho nodāttā sā kathānikā

जो कथा भय उत्पन्न करने वाली होकर भी सुखद परिणाम की ओर उन्मुख हो, मध्य में करुण रस रखे, अंत में अद्भुत से समाप्त हो, अर्थ की दृष्टि से सुव्यवस्थित हो और उदात्त शैली न अपनाए—वही ‘कथानिका’ कहलाती है।
