Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Vastu","secondary_vidya":"Shilpa","practical_application":"Applying proportional rules for architectural members—triangular element, semicircular element, and successive doubling measures including dvāra-kaṇṭha and upakaṇṭha—during doorway/ornamental construction.","sutra_style":true}

Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Procedure","entry_title":"Proportions of architectural members: tryaśra, ardhacandra, dvāra-kaṇṭha, upakaṇṭha","lookup_keywords":["tryaśra","ardhacandra","dvāra-kaṇṭha","upakaṇṭha","dviguṇa"],"quick_summary":"Specifies a measurement sequence: after setting a two-pada measure, successive members are doubled; the doorway-neck is twice the prior, and the subsidiary neck is twice that—guiding consistent architectural proportioning."}

Concept: Order (krama) and proportion (māna) generate structural harmony; doubling rules simplify complex design into repeatable ratios.

Application: Use a modular unit (pada) and apply dviguṇa scaling to maintain consistent moulding/door proportions across a build.

Khanda Section: Vastu-shastra / Shilpa (architectural measurement and temple/building proportions)

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A sthapati marks a doorway elevation: a triangular member topped by a semicircular motif; measurement lines show two-pada base and successive doubling up to dvāra-kaṇṭha and upakaṇṭha.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural, artisan-sage with measuring cord and stylus, doorway diagram on a wall panel, tryaśra and ardhacandra motifs clearly shown, earthy tones, decorative architectural borders.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting, ornate temple doorway with gold-highlighted mouldings, visible semicircular arch motif, inset showing measurement doubling (dviguṇa) with traditional tools, rich reds and greens.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting, technical elevation drawing aesthetic, clean measurement ticks labeled ‘pada’, ‘dviguṇa’, ‘dvāra-kaṇṭha’, ‘upakaṇṭha’, craftsman demonstrating with scale and cord.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, workshop scene with architects, a detailed doorway elevation on paper, compass and ruler, annotations of doubling ratios, refined architectural detailing in the background."}

Sandhi Resolution Notes:

FAQs

It gives a Vāstu/Śilpa proportional rule: after a triangular element comes a semicircular one, and subsequent architectural members (including doorway ‘neck’ bands like dvāra-kaṇṭha and upakaṇṭha) are sized by a stepwise doubling sequence using the unit ‘pada’.

Beyond theology, the Agni Purāṇa preserves technical canons of architecture—precise proportional design rules for structural/ornamental components—showing its compendium-like coverage of applied sciences such as Vāstu and Śilpa.

In Purāṇic Vāstu, correct proportions are treated as dhārmic alignment of sacred space; building according to canon is said to support auspiciousness, stability, and the merit (puṇya) associated with properly formed ritual and devotional structures.
