Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Tantra","secondary_vidya":"Mantra","practical_application":"Discernment of authentic Vaiṣṇava Pañcarātra teachers; safeguarding initiation and mantra transmission from egoic or tamasic claimants.","sutra_style":true}

Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Definition","entry_title":"Adhikāri–Anadhikāri Lakṣaṇa: False Teacher in Pañcarātra","lookup_keywords":["Pañcarātra","deśika","tamas","acaitanya","ahaṃ brahmā","ahaṃ viṣṇu"],"quick_summary":"A teacher lacking spiritual awareness and dominated by tamas—especially one outside Pañcarātra—should be recognized as unfit, even if he makes grand identity-claims like ‘I am Brahmā/Viṣṇu’."}

Concept: Authority in mantra/tantra depends on sampradāya and inner awakening; egoic self-deification without tradition is a mark of tamas and unfitness.

Application: Before accepting dīkṣā or instruction, examine lineage adherence (Pañcarātra), conduct, and clarity of consciousness; avoid teachers who substitute ego-claims for śāstric grounding.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: bibhatsa

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A contrast scene: a dark, tamasic pseudo-teacher proclaiming ‘I am Brahmā/Viṣṇu’ with arrogant posture, while a calm Pañcarātra ācārya sits with śāstra and disciples, emphasizing lineage and humility.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style, two-panel didactic composition: left—tamas-dominated figure in dark tones with boastful gesture and speech-scroll; right—serene Vaiṣṇava ācārya with conch-disc symbols subtly present, palm-leaf manuscripts, disciples seated respectfully.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting: central dignified ācārya with gold aura, śāstra in hand; peripheral smaller vignette of the false teacher in subdued colors, ornate borders, gold embossing highlighting the true teacher’s sanctity.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting: instructional moral tableau with clear labels ‘deśika’ and ‘anadhikāri’, fine facial expressions showing tamas vs sattva, manuscript and initiation implements (kalaśa, pañca-saṃskāra marks) depicted delicately.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature: courtly debate setting, one claimant gesturing grandly, another scholar-ācārya calmly pointing to a manuscript; detailed textiles, restrained palette, calligraphic captions."}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: अचैतन्याः तमोद्रिक्ताः (visarga/ending adjustments in continuous recitation). ब्रह्माहं = ब्रह्म + अहम्; विष्णुरमलः = विष्णुः + अमलः; विद्यात्स = विद्यात् + सः.

FAQs

It gives a doctrinal test for identifying an unfit initiating teacher (deśika): one who is tamas-dominated, outside Pañcarātra authority, and makes self-deifying claims such as “I am Brahmā/Viṣṇu.”

Beyond mythology, the Agni Purana catalogs applied religious systems (āgamas/tantras) like Pañcarātra and sets practical eligibility criteria for teachers and initiation—an institutional, procedural layer typical of its encyclopedic scope.

It warns seekers to avoid deluded, unauthorized instructors; choosing a qualified ācārya safeguards mantra practice from error, spiritual harm, and fruitless or adverse karmic outcomes.
