Sukta 10.95

Devata

Dialogue hymn (Purūravas & Urvāśī); devatā as the divine-human relational power (apsaras as luminous inspiration)

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (predominant in RV 10.95; dialogue sections vary but largely Triṣṭubh)

Inside Sukta 95

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A tense appeal to the ‘wife’ to stand with the mind in a hard moment, and to blend speech into a workable harmony (words as a ritual act).

  2. Development

The dialogue exposes incompatible expectations: the mortal seeks permanence and possession; the apsaras insists on divine conditions and the limits of embodied life. A key teaching emerges: without grounding and kratu, impulses remain unintegrated—restless like biting horses.

  3. Climax

The decisive pronouncement that the mortal becomes ‘mṛtyu-bandhu’—bound to death—clarifying that personal immortality is not seized by passion.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn redirects continuity toward prajā and yajña: offspring will worship with offerings, and the mortal may still partake of heavenly delight within the lawful order (svar).

The deity: Purūravas–Urvāśī dialogue

  • In the VedaThe hymn treats Urvāśī as an apsaras—radiant, elusive, and governed by divine law—while Purūravas speaks as the ardent mortal seeking union and continuity. The ‘devatā’ operates here less as a single god and more as the power of relationship itself: attraction, separation, and the terms by which the immortal realm touches human life.
  • Cosmic functionTo mark and maintain the boundary between immortal order and mortal embodiment, while permitting a regulated interface through rite, offspring, and sanctioned enjoyment (svar).
  • Inner significanceThe apsaras symbolizes higher inspiration and beauty that cannot be possessed by force; the mortal represents craving and speech seeking reconciliation. Their dialogue becomes an inner teaching: desire must be integrated with kratu (discernment/will) and grounding, or it turns restless and self-biting, failing to ‘adorn the body’ with harmony.

The seer

  • Purūravas Aiḷa (dialogue tradition; hymn framed as itihāsa-style vāda)Aila lineage (descendant of Iḷā/Ilā); not a standard gotra-attribution in the RV anukramaṇī style for this hymn · Iconic Vedic exemplar of the mortal–apsaras relationship, used to articulate the boundary between amṛta (immortal order) and mṛtyu (human condition) and the role of yajña in bridging them

Famous verses

वचांसि मिश्राः कृणवावहै नु
Verse 10.95.1Sets the tone: crisis, the need for mental steadiness, and the alchemy of ‘mingled speech’—mantra as a force that sweetens and reaches beyond the immediate day.Read verse 10.95.1 →
Verse 10.95.9Delivers a compact psychological doctrine: unless the mortal blends with the immortal order through grounding powers and kratu, his energies do not beautify the body and become self-disturbing.Read verse 10.95.9 →

Attributes of the deity

  • Dialogue-form (vāda): teaching through tension rather than praise alone
  • Apsaras quality: luminous, free, law-bound, non-possessable
  • Mortality vs. immortality framing (mṛtyu/amṛta)
  • Kratu (discernment/will) and grounding as conditions for integration
  • Yajña and prajā (offspring) as the durable bridge to the gods

Also by this seer

  • Associated in later Vedic-Itihāsa memory with the Purūravas–Urvāśī cycle (expanded in Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa and later literature)
  • Linked by tradition to themes of Gandharva–Apsaras cosmology and the sacrificial legitimation of human continuity (prajā) rather than personal immortality

The rite, step by step

  • Ācamana and saṅkalpa: intention set for harmonizing speech, desire, and duty
  • Agni-kindling (or lamp/fire presence) to establish the sacrificial witness
  • Recite selected verses as dialogue (two voices), maintaining Triṣṭubh cadence where applicable
  • Silent contemplation on the ‘terms’ of union: what is lawful, what is fleeting, what is enduring
  • Concluding offering and prayer for prajā, harmony of mind (manas), and right will (kratu)

Offerings

  • Ghee (ājya) into fire
  • Milk/rice oblation (pāyasa/odana) where customary
  • Water libation and simple flowers/incense in non-śrauta home settings

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a conversation between a human king and a divine apsaras. Their love becomes a lesson about why the human world cannot hold the divine on its own terms, and how sacrifice and right order give a lawful connection to heaven.

Because it draws a clear boundary: passion cannot override the conditions of embodied life. The hymn teaches that immortality is approached through alignment with cosmic order—especially through yajña and disciplined will (kratu)—not through possession.

It suggests that inspiration and beauty (apsaras-like energies) must be met with steadiness of mind and discernment. Otherwise, impulses remain restless and unharmonized; when integrated, they ‘adorn’ life and support duty, continuity, and higher joy.
