Pilgrimage Merits and Prayāga Supremacy
sadyastārayate jaṃtuḥ saptasaptāvarāṃstathā | punāti kīrttitā pāpaṃ dṛṣṭvā puṇyaṃ prayacchati
Unspecified (contextual narrator within the Svargakhaṇḍa dialogue)
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Type: river
Sandhi Resolution Notes: सद्यस्तारयते = सद्यः + तारयते (visarga sandhi); सप्तसप्तावरान् = सप्त + सप्त + अवरान् (no internal sandhi, numeral juxtaposition).
The verse presents a graded fruit: praising (kīrtana) purifies sin, while seeing (darśana) grants positive merit (puṇya), and the overall power is said to deliver the individual and extended generations.
“Saptasapta” is a conventional Purāṇic hyperbolic measure indicating extensive generational benefit—here expressed as seven times seven “lower” generations connected to the person.
The verse underscores the transformative value of sacred engagement: reverent praise and direct encounter (darśana) are portrayed as powerful means for purification and the accrual of merit.
