Chapter 376 —
Knowledge of Brahman
deha ātmā na bhavati dṛsyatvācca ghaṭādivat prasapte maraṇe dehādātmānyo jñāyate dhruvaṃ
Lord Agni (in discourse to sage Vasiṣṭha, typical Agni Purana narration frame)
Primary Rasa: Śānta
Secondary Rasa: Bhayānaka
Sandhi Resolution Notes:
It imparts ātma–anātma-viveka (discrimination between Self and non-Self): the body is a perceptible object, therefore it cannot be the perceiving Self.
Alongside ritual, polity, and other sciences, the Agni Purana also preserves mokṣa-śāstra material—here, a Vedāntic/Upaniṣadic-style argument establishing the Self’s distinction from the body.
Internalizing this distinction reduces attachment to the body, supports detachment (vairāgya), and is presented as a direct aid to liberation-oriented understanding (mokṣa-jñāna).
