The Sequence of the Second and Third Enclosure Worship (Āvaraṇa-pūjā)
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
It highlights that the one Pati (Lord Shiva) is approached through multiple ordered manifestations (mūrtis). For the bound soul (paśu), these names and forms become practical supports for devotion and contemplation, leading toward realization of Shiva’s supreme nature.
The verse points to Saguna Shiva—Shiva known through names and forms. In Linga-worship, devotees concentrate on Shiva’s presence as the supreme Lord while invoking such specific epithets (like Ugra, Bhīma, Mahādeva) to align prayer with particular aspects of divine power, protection, and grace.
A simple takeaway is nāma-japa and dhyāna: recite Shiva’s names in sequence (especially “Mahādeva”) with the Panchākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” while meditating on Shiva as the inner Lord who manifests various forms for the devotee’s upliftment.
