Shiva Purana — Vayaviya Samhita, Shloka 18

The Greatness of the Pañcākṣarī (Five-Syllable) Mantra

FAQs

It teaches that sincere, properly performed Śiva-pūjā yields tangible karmic fruits—abundance and higher realms—while implying that devotion (bhakti) aligned with right method purifies desire and gradually turns the seeker toward Śiva as the supreme goal (Pati).

The verse praises śiva-pūjā-vidhi (the prescribed mode of worship), which in the Purāṇic context commonly centers on Saguna Śiva worship through the Śiva-liṅga with offerings, mantra, and reverence—producing both worldly and heavenly results.

It points to following the established śiva-pūjā-vidhi—regular Liṅga worship with mantra-japa (often the Pañcākṣarī, “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”), purity of conduct, and disciplined offerings—performed with devotion rather than mere bargaining for results.
