Puraścaraṇa and the Discipline of the Mantra-Sādhaka

Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Rudra
Significance: Frames daily tarpana and Śiva-homa as accessible even with minimal dravya (down to ghee alone): a theology of grace where intention and continuity matter, supporting the bound soul’s gradual loosening of pāśa through disciplined worship.
Type: rudram
Role: liberating
It teaches disciplined daily Shaiva worship: by tarpana and homa, the devotee cultivates purity, gratitude, and steady devotion to Pati (Śiva), loosening pāśa (bondage) and refining the pashu (individual soul) toward grace.
The verse supports Saguna Śiva-upāsanā through ritual action—offerings into Śiva’s consecrated fire as an extension of Linga worship—where the devotee serves the manifest Lord with reverence while aiming for inner purification.
Daily tarpana and Śiva-homa are recommended, allowing flexibility in materials (seven, five, three substances, or only ghee), emphasizing regularity and devotion over elaborate procurement.
