Role: teaching
It classifies the soul’s trajectory (gati) according to the three guṇas: sattva lifts consciousness toward higher states, tamas pulls it toward decline and bondage, and rajas keeps it in an in-between cycle of restless striving—implying that purification toward sattva supports liberation under Shiva’s grace.
Linga-worship and devotion to Saguna Shiva are presented as practical means to refine conduct and mind: they reduce tamas (inertia, delusion) and pacify rajas (agitation), making the aspirant fit for Shiva’s purifying presence that leads toward the upward gati.
Cultivate sāttvika discipline through Shiva-upāsanā: steady japa of the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), regular bhasma/Tripuṇḍra with reverence, and meditation that calms rajas and dispels tamas—so the inner movement becomes “upward.”
