Shiva Purana — Vayaviya Samhita, Shloka 5

मन्दरगिरिवर्णनम् — Description of Mount Mandara as Śiva’s Residence

Tapas-abode

Suta Goswami (narrating to the sages at Naimisharanya, describing a sacred Shaiva mountain/abode in the Vāyavīyasaṃhitā)

Tattva Level: pati

Sthala Purana: The narrator confesses the inadequacy of ordinary language to ‘contain’ the mountain’s beauty, reinforcing the kṣetra’s transcendence and exceptional sanctity due to Śiva’s association.

Significance: Encourages direct encounter (darśana/yātrā) over mere description; the sacred is to be approached through bhakti and presence rather than discourse alone.

FAQs

It teaches that Shiva’s sacred abodes are not merely physical scenery; their sanctity and subtle power exceed ordinary speech, inviting humble reverence and inward contemplation rather than mere literary description.

By stressing the inadequacy of ordinary description, the verse points to Saguna Shiva’s manifested presence in holy places and symbols (such as the Linga), where devotion and direct worship reveal what words cannot fully capture.

Approach the tirtha with bhakti and silence: perform simple Shiva-upasana—japa of the Panchakshara ("Om Namaḥ Śivāya"), and if appropriate, apply Tripundra and offer water—letting experience and devotion replace excessive verbalization.
