Bhadra’s Divine Chariot-Ascent and the Conch-Blast
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Vīrabhadra
The simile teaches swiftness and all-pervasiveness: as the sun’s rays spread everywhere, disciplined heroic action can swiftly pervade and protect the world when aligned with dharma—ultimately to be offered to Pati (Shiva) rather than to ego.
Though it is a battle-image, it supports Saguna devotion by portraying divine order manifesting through tangible power and protection; in Shaiva practice, such power is ideally surrendered at the Linga as service (seva) and gratitude to Shiva, the inner Lord of all directions.
A practical takeaway is directional remembrance (dik-smarana) of Shiva—mentally offering one’s actions to Shiva in all quarters—along with steady japa of the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) to make one’s resolve as pervasive and steady as sunlight.
