हिरण्यनेत्रस्य तपः — Hiraṇyanetra’s Austerity and the Boon

It warns that vitta-mada (pride born of wealth) destroys dharma: when reverence for Veda, guru, and devas collapses, one’s life is spent in mere enjoyment, and the soul accrues bondage (pāśa) rather than moving toward Shiva’s grace and liberation.
Linga-worship in the Shiva Purana is grounded in humility, discipline, and honoring guru and śāstra; this verse shows the opposite mindset—arrogance and contempt—which blocks devotion (bhakti) and the receptivity needed for Saguna Shiva’s anugraha (grace).
Adopt daily Shiva-oriented discipline: bow to guru and elders, recite the Panchākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) with repentance for pride, and practice simple worship with bhasma (Tripuṇḍra) and mindful restraint to counteract arrogance.
