Viṣṇu (addressing Brahmā during the test of the infinite Liṅga-like pillar)

Tattva Level: pashu

Shiva Form: Liṅgodbhava

Sthala Purana: The ‘test’ is operationalized: Viṣṇu instructs Brahmā (Prajāpati) to ascend swiftly to find the upper limit—an archetypal motif culminating in the recognition that the liṅga/light has no terminus.

Significance: Teaches that even the highest created intellect (Brahmā) cannot ‘reach’ Śiva by effort alone; surrender and truthfulness become the real pilgrimage virtues.

B
Brahma
V

S

FAQs

The verse frames the divine “test” (parīkṣā) that reveals Shiva as the limitless Pati (Lord). Even the highest cosmic powers must strive, yet ultimately recognize the Infinite beyond measurement—cultivating humility and surrender, central to Shaiva Siddhanta.

The instruction to ascend toward the manifestation points to the Liṅga as Shiva’s accessible Saguna revelation of the boundless Nirguna reality. The narrative teaches that the Liṅga is not a mere symbol but a doorway to the immeasurable Lord.

The takeaway is focused striving (prayatna) and one-pointed ascent of awareness—practically expressed as steady japa of the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya” and Liṅga-dhyāna, supported by purity practices like bhasma (tripuṇḍra) and devotion.
