The Greatness of the Gaṅgā
Gaṅgāmāhātmya
Sanatkumara (teaching Narada)
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: bhakti
Secondary Rasa: shanta
It elevates two supreme purifiers—Gāyatrī (as the essence of Vedic chandas and mantra-japa) and Gaṅgā (as the foremost tīrtha)—stating that both function as direct causes for the removal of sin (pāpa-kṣaya).
By honoring Gāyatrī through reverent japa and approaching Gaṅgā as a sacred presence, the devotee practices surrender and sacred remembrance—devotional acts that purify the heart and support steady bhakti.
It points to Chandas (a Vedāṅga) by calling Gāyatrī the “mother of metres,” implying the practical importance of correct metrical/mantric recitation for effective japa and ritual purity.
