Narada Purana — Purva Bhaga, Shloka 63

Dhvaja-Dhāraṇa Mahātmyam: Sumati–Satyamatī, Humility, and Deliverance by Hari’s Messengers

एतच्त्छुवातिकुपिता विष्णुदूता महौजसः । प्रत्यूचूस्तान्यमभटानधर्मे धर्ममानिनः ॥ ६३ ॥

etactchuvātikupitā viṣṇudūtā mahaujasaḥ | pratyūcūstānyamabhaṭānadharme dharmamāninaḥ || 63 ||

À ces paroles, les puissants messagers de Viṣṇu s’irritèrent vivement et répondirent aux serviteurs de Yama, qui, tout en agissant dans l’adharma, se croyaient dans le dharma.

FAQs

It highlights that mere institutional authority is not dharma; true dharma is aligned with Bhagavān Viṣṇu, and those who protect devotion and righteousness can challenge even Yama’s agents when they act against dharma.

By portraying Viṣṇu’s attendants as defenders of the devotee, it reinforces a core bhakti teaching: surrender to Viṣṇu brings divine guardianship, and the Lord’s grace overrides punitive forces when devotion is genuine.

The verse primarily teaches Dharma-śāstra discernment (right conduct vs. self-righteousness). It does not directly present a Vedāṅga technical topic like Vyākaraṇa or Jyotiṣa, but it stresses correct application of dharma rather than mere claims of legality.
