The Exposition of the Table of Contents (Anukramaṇī) of the Agni Purāṇa
śrībrahmovāca | athātaḥ saṃpravakṣyāmi tavāgneyapurāṇakam | īśānakalpavṛttāṃtaṃ vasiṣṭhāyānalo'bravīt || 1 ||
Brahma
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
It establishes the authority and transmission-lineage of the Agneya Purāṇa, presenting it as a received sacred narrative (Agni → Vasiṣṭha) that Brahmā now summarizes—typical of the Narada Purana’s anukramaṇikā (puranic index) style.
Bhakti is not directly taught here; instead, the verse prepares the listener for dharma and devotion-oriented teachings by grounding them in a recognized Purāṇic source and an established teacher-disciple chain.
The mention of “kalpa” (Īśāna-kalpa) points to Kalpa-Vedāṅga—procedural/ritual organization—indicating that the forthcoming Purāṇic material is connected with structured ritual and traditional compendia.
