The verse underscores the Mahābhārata theme that certain outcomes unfold through daiva (destiny) and prior karma; individuals may feel they are choosing, yet they often enact what has already been set in motion, and one should recognize inevitability without delusion.
In the grief-filled context of Strīparvan, Vaiśampāyana comments that the impending ruin of the Vṛṣṇi/Yādava line is certain and divinely fated, addressing a kṣatriya woman and framing events as the working-out of what has already been done.
