Adhyātma–Adhibhūta–Adhidaivata Correspondences and the Triguṇa Lakṣaṇas (Śānti-parva 301)

सत्त्वस्य च गुणान्‌ कृत्स्नान्‌ रजसश्च गुणान्‌ पुनः । गुणांश्न तमस: सर्वान्‌ गुणान्‌ बुद्धेश्न भारत

sattvasya ca guṇān kṛtsnān rajasaś ca guṇān punaḥ | guṇāṁś ca tamasaḥ sarvān guṇān buddheś ca bhārata bharatanandana dharmātmā rājā yudhiṣṭhira | parabrahma paramātmā sāttvika-rājasa-tāmasa-guṇān buddhi-mana-ākāśa-vāyu-teja-jala-pṛthivī-eteṣāṁ sarveṣāṁ sampūrṇa-guṇān anyeṣāṁ ca sarva-vastūnāṁ guṇān svaguṇaiḥ vyāpya sarveṣu kṣetrajñeṣu sthitaḥ prabho | yathā śiṣyo gurum anugacchati tathā mana indriyāṇi ca śubhāśubha-karmāṇi ca jīvātmānam anugacchanti | yadā jīvātmā indriyāṇi prakṛtiṁ ca vihāya gacchati tadā nārāyaṇa-svarūpaṁ avināśinaṁ paramātmānaṁ prāpnoti yo dvandva-rahitaḥ māyātītaś ca |

Bhīṣma dit : « Ô Bharata, joie des Bhārata—ô roi Yudhiṣṭhira, établi dans le dharma—sache que le Brahman suprême, le Soi suprême, par sa propre puissance, pénètre toutes les qualités de sattva, de rajas et de tamas ; et de même l’ensemble des qualités de l’intellect et du mental, ainsi que de l’espace, du vent, du feu, de l’eau et de la terre, et, en vérité, de toutes choses. Ainsi demeure-t-Il au sein de tous les “connaisseurs du champ” (toutes les âmes incarnées). Seigneur, comme le disciple marche derrière son maître, ainsi le mental, les sens, et les actes heureux ou funestes suivent l’âme individuelle. Lorsque l’âme s’en va, laissant même les sens et la Nature, elle atteint ce Soi suprême impérissable, de forme Nārāyaṇa—au-delà des dualités et au-delà de la māyā. »

The Supreme Self (Parabrahman/Paramātman, identified with Nārāyaṇa) pervades all qualities and elements and is present in all living selves; liberation is described as the jīva transcending mind, senses, and prakṛti, attaining the imperishable reality beyond dualities and māyā.
