Kapila–Cow Dialogue: Authority of Householder and Renunciant Dharmas
सम्भाव्य चटकान मूर्थ्नि जाजलिर्जपतां वर: । आस्फोटयत् तथा55काशे धर्म: प्राप्तो मयेति वै
Sambhāvya caṭakān mūrdhni Jājaliḥ japatāṁ varaḥ | āsphoṭayat tathākāśe dharmaḥ prāpto mayeti vai ||
Bhīṣma dit : Se remémorant comment des moineaux étaient venus nicher et se multiplier sur sa propre tête, Jājali—le premier parmi ceux qui se vouent au japa—se complut en lui-même, se croyant grand soutien du dharma. Comme s’il battait des mains dans le ciel, il proclama d’une voix nette : « Oui, j’ai atteint le dharma. »
भीष्म उवाच
External signs of austerity or unusual occurrences (like birds nesting on an ascetic) can inflate ego; true dharma requires inner humility and right understanding, not self-congratulation.
Bhīṣma narrates that the ascetic Jājali, remembering sparrows nesting and thriving on his head, takes it as proof of his sanctity and publicly declares that he has attained dharma.
