Droṇa-parva Adhyāya 58: Yudhiṣṭhira’s dawn rites, royal gifts, and the reception of Kṛṣṇa

nārada uvāca | etān abhīṣṭa-varān prāpya rājā śibiḥ samayāgate svargalokaṁ gataḥ | sañjaya! te tvad-apekṣayā pūrvoktāsu catasṛṣu bāteṣu bahu-bahutaraṁ śreṣṭhāḥ | tava putrād api adhika-puṇyātmānaḥ | śvityanandana! yadā te śibayo 'pi mṛtāḥ, tadā tvaṁ yajña-dāna-rahitasya svaputrasya kṛte evaṁ śokaṁ na kartum arhasi | nāradaḥ sañjayaṁ prati etad eva uvāca || iti śrīmahābhārate droṇaparvaṇi abhimanyuvadhaparvaṇi ṣoḍaśarājakīye 'ṣṭapañcāśattamo 'dhyāyaḥ ||

Educational Q&A

Narada teaches that grief should be tempered by dharmic reflection: even highly meritorious kings like Śibi ultimately die, and one should not be overwhelmed by sorrow—especially when the deceased lacked the sustaining merits of sacrifice and charity. The passage emphasizes impermanence and the ethical weight of yajña and dāna.

Narada addresses King Sañjaya, recalling King Śibi’s attainment of heaven after receiving boons and noting Śibi’s superior virtues. He then uses Śibi’s eventual death as a comparison to counsel Sañjaya not to lament excessively for his own son.
