वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse emphasizes consolation through remembrance and truthful narration: the epic’s purpose includes preserving and spreading the renown of noble lineages and deeds, encouraging the listener to move beyond grief by trusting in the enduring value of dharma and worthy action.
Vaiśampāyana, as the narrator, reassures his listener (addressed as ‘bharatarṣabha’) that he will recount and publicize the fame of both the Kauravas and the Pāṇḍavas, urging him not to sorrow—signaling the start of a commemorative, lineage-centered telling of events.
