Adhyāya 90: Babhruvāhana’s Reception and the Commencement of Yudhiṣṭhira’s Aśvamedha

एकां दत्त्वा स पारक्‍्यां नरकं॑ समपद्यत । “राजा नृगने ब्राह्मणोंको हजारों गौएँ दान की थीं; किंतु एक ही गौ दूसरेकी दान कर दी, जिससे अन्यायत: प्राप्त द्रव्यका दान करनेके कारण उन्हें नरकमें जाना पड़ा ।।

ekāṃ dattvā sa pārakyāṃ narakaṃ samapadyata |

Pour avoir donné une seule vache qui appartenait à autrui, il tomba en enfer. Le passage rappelle le roi Nṛga : bien qu’il eût offert des milliers de vaches aux brāhmaṇas, pour avoir, par méprise, donné ne fût-ce qu’une vache qui n’était pas légitimement sienne, il encourut la faute d’offrir un bien acquis sans justice et, pour cela, subit la chute en enfer—montrant que la pureté de la possession et la justice dans le don sont essentielles au dharma.
