Adhyāya 90: Babhruvāhana’s Reception and the Commencement of Yudhiṣṭhira’s Aśvamedha

न्यायलब्धैर्यथा सूक्ष्मै: श्रद्धापूते: स तुष्यति । “तात! अन्यायपूर्वक प्राप्त हुए द्रव्यके द्वारा महान्‌ फल देनेवाले बड़े-बड़े दान करनेसे धर्मको उतनी प्रसन्नता नहीं होती, जितनी न्यायोपार्जित थोड़े-से अन्नका भी श्रद्धापूर्वक दान करनेसे उन्हें प्रसन्नता होती है ।।

nyāyalabdhair yathā sūkṣmaiḥ śraddhāpūtaiḥ sa tuṣyati | tāta! anyāyapūrvaka-prāptena dravyeṇa mahān phala-dāyakāni bṛhad-bṛhad dānāni kṛtvāpi dharmaḥ tāvat na prasīdati, yāvat nyāyopārjita-alpasya annasyāpi śraddhayā dānena prasīdati ||

Le beau-père dit : « Mon fils, le Dharma ne se réjouit pas des dons grandioses qui promettent un vaste mérite lorsqu’ils proviennent de richesses acquises injustement ; mais il se satisfait davantage d’une simple offrande de nourriture gagnée avec droiture et donnée avec une foi sincère. La pureté des moyens et la révérence du donateur l’emportent sur l’ampleur du don. »
