Adhyāya 88 — निर्वाणदीक्षाकथनं
Teaching of the Nirvāṇa-Initiation
Lord Agni (in discourse to Sage Vasiṣṭha, typical Agni Purāṇa frame)
Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Mantra","secondary_vidya":"Tantra","practical_application":"Protective/clearing prayoga: use phaḍ-bīja for cutting/splitting obstacles (pāśa), namo-ending for entry/approach and stabilization, then phaḍ again for separation/release.","sutra_style":true}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Procedure","entry_title":"Kalā-pāśa-bhedana and viyojana with phaḍ and namo mantras","lookup_keywords":["kalā-pāśa","phaḍ","namo","bhedana","viyojana"],"quick_summary":"Gives a step-sequence for striking and splitting the ‘noose of kalā’ with phaḍ, entering within, then using namo and phaḍ to effect disjunction/release."}
Weapon Type: Mantra (as cutting/striking force)
Concept: Bandha-mokṣa enacted ritually: pāśa (bond) is struck, split, entered, and separated—symbolizing liberation from limiting kalās.
Application: In japa/nyāsa-based protection, apply phaḍ for energetic severance and namo for surrender/entry; keep strict order to avoid ‘re-binding’ the intended release.
Khanda Section: Mantra-tantra and Nyasa/Prayoga-vidhi (Protective rites; Mantra application)
Primary Rasa: vira
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A sādhaka confronts a luminous rope-like ‘kalā-pāśa’; with a striking gesture it is hit, then split by the syllable phaḍ; the sādhaka steps through, then performs namo and phaḍ to separate and release the binding strands.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural, bold flat forms: priest-sādhaka with raised hand in tāḍana, glowing rope-noose around a subtle body, stylized ‘phaḍ’ as flame-like glyph cutting the rope, decorative temple backdrop","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore, dramatic central figure with gold aura, the noose rendered as jeweled loop, ‘phaḍ’ shown as golden lightning splitting it, ornate borders, rich maroons and greens, embossed gold highlights","mysore_prompt":"Mysore style, step-by-step instructional composition: four vignettes labeled tāḍana, bhedana (phaḍ), praveśa (namo), viyojana (phaḍ), fine linework and soft colors","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, refined scene of an ascetic in a garden pavilion performing mudrā, the noose depicted as translucent ribbon, calligraphic ‘phaḍ’ and ‘namo’ in the air, detailed textiles and flora"}
Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"instructional","suggested_raga":"Hindol","pace":"medium","voice_tone":"instructional"}
Sandhi Resolution Notes: नमो ऽन्तेन = नमः + अन्तेन (visarga-lopa before vowel); प्रविश्यान्तर् = प्रविश्य + अन्तः (र्-आदेश/पदसन्धि in recitation).
Related Themes: Agni Purana 88 (nyāsa/prayoga-vidhi: phaḍ usage; pāśa terminology; viyojana/bhedana actions)
It teaches a specific mantra-prayoga: strike and split a subtle ‘pāśa’ (bond) using a “phaḍ”-ending mantra, enter the inner locus, then use “namo” followed by “phaḍ” to accomplish viyoga—ritual disjunction/release.
Beyond myth and devotion, it preserves applied ritual technology—precise operational steps (strike, pierce, enter, separate) with functional mantra-endings (“namo”, “phaḍ”), exemplifying the Purāṇa’s manual-like coverage of esoteric rites.
Symbolically, it breaks binding forces (pāśa) that obstruct purity and autonomy; performing viyoga under “namo” (submission to the divine) and “phaḍ” (severance) is framed as removing impediments and restoring spiritual protection.
