Agni Purana — Vastu-Pratishtha & Isana-kalpa, Shloka 16

Śānti-Śodhana-Kathana (Instruction on the Purification of Śānti) — Agni Purāṇa, Adhyāya 87

Lord Agni (narrating ritual procedure to the sage Vasiṣṭha in the Agni Purāṇa’s instructional frame)

Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Mantra","secondary_vidya":"Tantra","practical_application":"Shānti-karma and pāśa-mantra homa: utter a specific mantra, ‘project’ it (visṛjya), form a protective circle (vर्तुलीकृत्य), then offer ghee oblations using the kalāstra as the operative mantra-weapon.","sutra_style":false}

Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Mantra","entry_title":"Śānti-kalā Pāśa-mantra with Vartulīkaraṇa and Kalāstra-homa","lookup_keywords":["oṃ hauṃ","śānti-kalā","pāśa-mantra","vartulīkaraṇa","kalāstra-homa"],"quick_summary":"Recite the Śānti-kalā Pāśa mantra, project it and establish a circular protective field, then perform ghee oblations, treating the kalāstra mantra-weapon as the effective instrument of the homa."}

Weapon Type: Kalāstra (mantra-weapon); Pāśa (noose) as binding/containing implement in ritual sense

Concept: Mantra is treated as a force that can be projected, shaped (into a circle), and applied through fire as a transformative medium.

Application: In śānti rites, first establish a boundary/maṇḍala (here, circular) and then proceed to homa so the rite remains ‘contained’ and targeted.

Khanda Section: Puja-vidhi / Tantra-mantra Prayoga (Shanti-karma and Pasha-mantra Homa procedures)

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A homa altar with a ladle full of ghee; the practitioner chants ‘oṃ hauṃ…phaṭ’, releases the mantra outward to form a glowing circular boundary, then offers oblations as the kalāstra mantra-weapon blazes through the fire.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural, circular luminous maṇḍala around the homa-kuṇḍa, stylized mantra syllables in gold/ochre, priest in profile pouring ghee, flames shaped like a weapon-arc (kalāstra), serene yet powerful.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting, thick gold-leaf circle (vartula) encircling the altar, embossed gold flames, priest holding śruva, mantra text band in Devanāgarī, opulent ritual vessels.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting, clear instructional scene: circle-drawing gesture, then homa with labeled ‘śruva (ghṛta)’ and ‘kalāstra’, soft colors, precise detailing of implements.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, refined interior with fire-altar, translucent glowing circle around the rite, calligraphic mantra ribbon, detailed brass ladle and ghee pot, controlled dramatic light."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"devotional","suggested_raga":"Yaman","pace":"medium","voice_tone":"devotional"}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: कलास्त्रेणैव → कलास्त्रेण एव; (वर्तुलीकृत्य = वर्तुली कृत्य); घृतपूर्णे श्रुवे = घृतपूर्णे (विशेषण) + श्रुवे (अधिकरण).

FAQs

It teaches a Śānti-kalpa homa step: energize and project specific bīja-syllables, form a protective circular arrangement (vartulī-kṛtya), then offer ghee oblations using the Pāśa-mantra and the Kalāstra (mantra-weapon) according to the previously given method.

It exemplifies the Agni Purāṇa’s manual-like coverage of applied ritual technology—precise mantra sequences, protective configurations, and homa mechanics—alongside its many other domains (polity, medicine, architecture, poetics), showing its breadth as a compendium of practical śāstric procedures.

As a śānti rite, it aims at pacification and protection—removing obstacles and hostile influences through mantra-directed oblations—thereby supporting purification, auspiciousness, and the stabilization of the practitioner’s ritual environment.
