Lord Agni (in dialogue tradition, instructing sage Vasiṣṭha)
Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Tantra","secondary_vidya":"Mantra","practical_application":"Guiding mantra-prayoga and textual criticism within Śiva-tattva-śuddhi: recognizing variant readings (recensions), correct bīja usage, homa for pāpa-kṣaya, and rejecting simplistic claims of instant ‘Śivahood’ without adhikāra and proper sādhanā.","sutra_style":false}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Commentary","entry_title":"Śiva-tattva-śuddhi: mantra variants (Oṃ hāṃ/hāṃ hāṃ), bīja-siddhi, pāpa-kṣaya homa, and limits of ‘Śivatva-bodhana’","lookup_keywords":["śiva-tattva-śuddhi","oṃ hāṃ mantra","bīja-siddhi","pāpa-kṣaya homa","pāṭha-bheda"],"quick_summary":"The passage records variant manuscript readings for a Śaiva purification mantra and associated homa aims (sin-destruction, bīja accomplishment), while cautioning that awakening into Śivahood is not achieved merely by formula without fitness and deeper discipline."}
Concept: Mantra and ritual are efficacious within adhikāra and correct understanding; mere verbal formula does not confer ultimate ontological transformation (śivatva) without qualification and awakening.
Application: Practitioners verify lineage/text reading, perform prescribed homa for purification, pursue bīja-sādhana with discipline, and avoid overclaims of instant liberation or deification.

Sandhi Resolution Notes: śuddhestu = śuddheḥ tu; mamantreṇeti = ma-mantreṇa iti; mātrā/mantra portions are mantra-text; ṅa/ga/gha and ‘cihnitapustakapāṭhaḥ’ are editorial recensional notes; homaneti = homena iti; śivatvārhasya = śivatva-arhasya.
Related Themes: Agni Purana mantra-vidhi and pūjā-vidhi sections on bīja, nyāsa, homa, and tattva-śuddhi (Agneya-vidyā cluster)
It outlines a Śaiva ritual frame: tattva-śuddhi (purifying metaphysical principles), svīkāra (formal acceptance/initiation) treated as a rebirth, use of the bīja “hāṃ” with “ātmane namaḥ,” and homa performed for pāpa-kṣaya and bīja-siddhi.
It preserves variant ritual readings (mantra-pāṭhas) and links metaphysical purification (tattva-śuddhi) with practical liturgy (mantra + homa), showing the Agni Purana’s handbook-style coverage of sectarian worship procedures alongside doctrine.
The verse emphasizes that mantra-recitation and homa can purify sins and empower a bīja, yet true “Śivahood” requires eligibility and proper awakening—implying karmic purification is supportive but not, by itself, the full realization or conferment of Śiva-state.
