Chapter 81 — समयदीक्षाविधानम्
Procedure for Samaya Initiation
Lord Agni (narrating ritual procedure to Vasiṣṭha in the Agni Purāṇa’s instructional frame)
Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Tantra","secondary_vidya":"Mantra","practical_application":"Provides a specific Śaiva dīpana mantra (‘oṃ hrūṃ hrauṃ hrīṃ śivāya hrūṃ phaḍ’) and then prescribes ritual preparation: washing the sthālī with Śiva-consecrated water and securing it with protective sealing (varma-guṇṭhita).","sutra_style":true}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Mantra","entry_title":"Dīpana mantra ‘oṃ hrūṃ hrauṃ hrīṃ śivāya hrūṃ phaḍ’ and purification/sealing of the sthālī","lookup_keywords":["oṃ hrūṃ hrauṃ hrīṃ","śivāya","hrūṃ phaḍ","śivāmbhas","sthālī kṣālana"],"quick_summary":"Use the given bīja-mantra for dīpana (energizing); then cleanse the ritual bowl with Śiva-water and seal/protect it with a varma-like covering to maintain ritual purity and protection."}

Application: Before offerings, purify and ‘seal’ implements to prevent ritual contamination and to stabilize mantra-siddhi.
Khanda Section: Puja-vidhi / Mantra-tantra (Śaiva mantra-prayoga and ritual preparation)
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta

Sandhi Resolution Notes: फड् + इति + आदि + दीपनम् → फडित्यादिदीपनं; शिव + अम्भसा → शिवाम्भसा; वर्म + गुण्ठिताम् → वर्मगुण्ठितां.
Related Themes: Agni Purana Puja-vidhi/Mantra-tantra: sections on śivāmbhas (consecrated water), pātra-śuddhi, rakṣā/varma, and dīpana mantras (same khanda context)
It teaches a Śaiva mantra-prayoga: using bīja-syllables (hrūṃ, hrauṃ, hrīṃ) with ‘śivāya’ and ‘phaḍ’ to activate the rite (dīpana), followed by purification of the ritual vessel with mantra-consecrated water and protective sealing of the implement.
Beyond mythology, it preserves practical liturgical technology—mantra selection, activation (dīpana), ritual hygiene (pātra-śuddhi), and protective procedures (varma/guṇṭhana)—showing the Agni Purāṇa as a manual of applied ritual science.
Mantra-activation and vessel purification are meant to remove ritual impurities and obstacles, ensuring the offering becomes fit for Śiva; the protective ‘phaḍ’ and sealing act as a safeguard so the rite proceeds without disturbance and yields cleaner, more efficacious merit (puṇya).
