Chapter 64 — कूपादिप्रतिष्ठाकथनं
The Account of the Consecration of Wells and Other Water-Works
Lord Agni (narrating ritual procedure to Sage Vasiṣṭha, as per the usual Agni Purana dialogic frame)

Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Procedure","entry_title":"Adhi-vāsa and sānnidhya in Varuṇa installation","lookup_keywords":["mūlena uttiṣṭha","utthāpana","adhi-vāsa","sānnidhya","Varuṇa invocation"],"quick_summary":"Raise/awaken the deity with the root-mantra ‘mūlena uttiṣṭha’, keep the form in adhi-vāsa for the night, and worship with ‘varuṇam ca iti’ to secure divine presence (sānnidhya)."}
Concept: Deity-presence is ritually ‘made present’ and stabilized through mantra (mūla), time (overnight adhi-vāsa), and continued upacāra—bridging Vaidika and Tantric consecration logic.
Application: Temple/household consecration step: perform utthāpana, keep vigil/adhi-vāsa, then continue worship to ensure sānnidhya before main rite.
Khanda Section: Puja-vidhi (Tantric/Vaidika consecration and nightly adhi-vasa rites)
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"At night in a lamp-lit shrine, the priest ‘awakens’ the installed Varuṇa form with the root-mantra, then keeps it in adhi-vāsa—guarded, garlanded, and worshipped to secure sānnidhya.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural, nocturnal shrine with oil lamps, priest raising hands in mantra, Varuṇa presence as luminous aura over a kalaśa/arcā, attendants keeping vigil, deep reds and blacks with glowing highlights.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore, gold-lit night consecration: deity form on pedestal with heavy garlands, priest performing utthāpana, lamps and gold embossing creating a radiant sānnidhya aura, rich blues for night.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting, clear depiction of adhi-vāsa setup: covered altar, protective threads, lamps, priest reciting ‘mūlena uttiṣṭha’; instructional clarity with gentle colors.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, intimate night interior with many lamps, priest and assistants in quiet vigil, deity presence suggested by a soft halo over the installed vessel/image, fine architectural detail and textiles."}
Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"contemplative","suggested_raga":"Darbari Kanada","pace":"slow","voice_tone":"contemplative"}
Sandhi Resolution Notes: mūlenottiṣṭheti = mūlena + uttiṣṭha + iti; uttiṣṭhetyutthāpya = uttiṣṭha + iti + utthāpya; varuṇañceti = varuṇam + ca + iti; yadvāraṇyena = yad + vā + araṇyena.
Related Themes: Agni Purana 64.15-64.16 (snāpana and upacāra sequencing preceding/around consecration); Agni Purana installation-related sections elsewhere (pratiṣṭhā/maṇḍala topics, if in the same khanda)
It teaches an adhi-vāsa step in installation: raise the installed form with the root-mantra (“mūlena uttiṣṭha”), keep it lodged overnight, and perform a Varuṇa-linked worship to establish sānnidhya (divine presence).
By preserving precise, step-by-step liturgical instructions (mantra-quotations, overnight adhi-vāsa, and Varuṇa-based purification/presence-establishment), it functions as a practical ritual manual alongside the Purana’s many other knowledge domains.
Adhi-vāsa and Varuṇa-oriented purification are intended to remove ritual impurity and stabilize the deity’s presence, making the subsequent worship/installation more efficacious and merit-producing (puṇya) for the patron and officiants.
