Related Themes: Agni Purana 53 (Liṅga-lakṣaṇa and pūjā-vidhi subsections); Agni Purana Śaiva ritual passages on liṅga-pratiṣṭhā and abhiṣeka
It introduces a structured rule-set for Śiva-liṅga iconography: after listing general liṅga-definitions, the text proceeds to universally applicable specifications extending to the piṇḍikā (the pedestal/base), which is crucial for installation and worship.
It exemplifies the Agni Purana’s manual-like coverage of applied religious sciences—iconography, temple construction components, and standardized ritual norms—alongside its many other domains (law, polity, medicine, poetics).
By emphasizing universally valid standards for the liṅga and its piṇḍikā, it frames correct form and procedure as supports for proper worship, which is traditionally held to enhance purity, efficacy of devotion, and the merit (puṇya) of installation and pūjā.
