प्रेतकार्ये निवृत्ते तु पितृत्वमुपजायते ॥ मासि मासि ह्यमायां वै कर्त्तव्यं पितृतर्पणम् ॥
pretakārye nivṛtte tu pitṛtvam upajāyate || māsi māsi hy amāyāṃ vai kartavyaṃ pitṛtarpaṇam ||
Cuando se han concluido los ritos para el difunto (preta), el fallecido alcanza la condición de ‘ancestro’ (pitṛ). Por ello, en cada día de luna nueva debe realizarse la ofrenda de libaciones a los ancestros (pitṛ-tarpaṇa).
