स्कन्दसरः (Skandasara) — तीर्थवर्णनम् / Description of the Skandasara Sacred Lake
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Significance: Frames the Śiva Purāṇa as a grace-bearing vehicle granting both bhukti and mukti—typical of Purāṇic ‘māhātmya’ that motivates pilgrimage/listening as a soteriological act.
Type: stotra
Role: liberating
It teaches that devotion to, and engagement with, the Śiva Purāṇa culminates in Śiva’s grace: one may pass through worldly experience (bhoga) yet ultimately attain mokṣa, because the text is especially beloved to Śiva and thus becomes a vehicle of liberation.
By declaring the Śiva Purāṇa “supremely dear to Śiva,” the verse implies that hearing/reciting it is a direct form of Saguna Śiva-bhakti, supporting Linga-worship through remembrance, praise, and alignment with Śiva’s revealed teachings that lead the soul toward release.
Regular śravaṇa (listening) and pāṭha (recitation) of the Śiva Purāṇa as a vrata-like practice—ideally alongside Śiva-nāma-japa (e.g., Pañcākṣarī: “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”)—is the practical takeaway implied by the promised fruit of liberation.
