Oh sabio, según la propia capacidad, deben darse un poblado, un elefante, un caballo y también otros dones. En verdad, todas esas ofrendas han de entregarse al noble recitador del Purāṇa, el magnánimo.
Suta Goswami (narrating the merit and procedure of Purana recitation and honoring the vācaka)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Significance: Honoring the vācaka (Purāṇa-reciter) is framed as honoring the vehicle of dharma and Śiva-kathā; generosity loosens attachment (a pāśa-mode) and supports receptivity to grace.
It teaches that honoring the transmitter of sacred Shaiva knowledge is itself a devotional act; giving according to one’s means supports dharma and strengthens śravaṇa-bhakti, which is praised as a path toward Shiva’s grace.
In Saguna Shiva worship, devotion is expressed through concrete acts—hearing Shiva’s Purana, serving the vācaka, and offering gifts—so the verse frames dāna as an extension of Linga-centered bhakti and reverence for Shiva’s teachings.
A practical takeaway is to conduct Shiva Purana kathā/recitation, then offer dakṣiṇā and gifts to the vācaka according to capacity, with a prayerful remembrance of Shiva (e.g., mentally repeating the Panchākṣarī, “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”).
