The verse underscores how outward brilliance—of weapons, armor, and jewels—can be instantly eclipsed by changing conditions (here, lamplight at nightfall), hinting at the fragility of worldly splendor amid the harsh reality of war.
As the battle continues into the onset of night, lamps are lit; their strong illumination makes the natural gleam of the warriors’ arms, armor, and jewels seem to vanish, emphasizing the growing darkness and the ongoing uproar of combat.
