Praise of Ācāra as the Basis of Longevity, Fame, and Prosperity
अत्र गाथा यमोदगीता: कीर्तयन्ति पुराविद: । आयुरस्य निकृन्तामि प्रजास्तस्थाददे तथा
atra gāthā yamodgītāḥ kīrtayanti purāvidaḥ | āyur asya nikṛntāmi prajāḥ tasthād ade tathā ||
Bhīṣma dijo: Sobre este asunto, los sabios versados en la antigua tradición recitan unos versos que antaño cantó Yama. (Declara Yama:) “Yo cerceno la vida del hombre que se levanta con la boca impura y corre de un lado a otro o se entrega a la recitación védica; y también lo privo de su descendencia. Asimismo, si un ‘dos veces nacido’ (dvija), por engaño, estudia incluso en los tiempos vedados para el estudio (anadhyāya), su logro védico y su longevidad quedan arruinados.” Por ello, el prudente no debe emprender jamás el estudio del Veda en horas prohibidas.
