अड्कुशं शौचमित्याहुरर्थानामुपधारणे । आनाम्य फलितां शाखां पक्वं पक्वं॑ प्रशातयेत्,'कार्यसिद्धिके लिये शौच-सदाचार आदिका पालन एक प्रकारका अंकुश (लोगोंको आकृष्ट करनेका साधन) बताया गया है। फलोंसे लदी हुई वृक्षकी शाखाको अपनी ओर कुछ झुकाकर ही मनुष्य उसके पके-पके फलको तोड़े
aṅkuśaṃ śaucam ity āhur arthānām upadhāraṇe | ānamya phalitāṃ śākhāṃ pakvaṃ pakvaṃ praśātayet ||
Dicen que la pureza—la conducta limpia y el dominio de sí—es como un aguijón para asegurar y sostener los fines y los recursos. Así como un hombre inclina hacia sí una rama cargada de frutos y luego arranca, uno a uno, los frutos maduros, del mismo modo la buena conducta disciplinada atrae el éxito al alcance de la mano y permite alcanzarlo con rectitud.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Moral purity and disciplined conduct (śauca) function as a controlling and attracting force—like a goad—that enables one to secure and sustain artha (practical aims, prosperity) in a proper way.
Vaiśampāyana presents an ethical illustration: success is not seized violently or at random; like bending a fruit-laden branch and plucking only the ripe fruits, one should bring goals within reach through good conduct and then attain them appropriately and in due measure.
