Yoga through Study and Restraint; The Keśidhvaja–Khāṇḍikya Narrative Frame
While reflecting thus, the king suddenly remembered: “Indeed, I have not yet given the teacher’s fee—the guru-dakṣiṇā—to Khāṇḍikya.”
Sage Parāśara (narrating to Maitreya)
Concept: A ritual’s completeness is ethically tied to honoring the teacher; neglect of gurudakṣiṇā leaves a subtle sense of incompletion.
Vedantic Theme: Dharma
Application: Acknowledge mentors materially and morally—repay guidance through gratitude, service, and responsible support.
Vishishtadvaita: Reverence to the guru is reverence to the Lord’s grace-channel; service to the teacher becomes a concrete mode of devotional surrender.
Bhakti Type: dasya
This verse highlights gurudakṣiṇā as a binding moral debt: even a sovereign king measures his integrity by whether he has properly honored his teacher.
Through a simple moment of remembrance, Parāśara shows that dharma operates internally as conscience—kingship is validated not merely by power but by fidelity to sacred obligations like repayment to one’s guru.
Though Vishnu is not named in this line, the Purana frames such acts of duty as alignment with the divine order upheld by Vishnu—the Supreme Reality who sustains dharma through right conduct in society.
