वेन-पृथु-प्रादुर्भावः, राजधर्मः, पृथिवीदोहनम्
Vena–Pṛthu Episode and the Milking of Earth
प्राणप्रदानात् स पृथुर् यस्माद् भूमेर् अभूत् पिता ततस् तु पृथिवीसंज्ञाम् अवापाखिलधारिणी
prāṇapradānāt sa pṛthur yasmād bhūmer abhūt pitā tatas tu pṛthivīsaṃjñām avāpākhiladhāriṇī
Because Pṛthu bestowed life and sustenance upon the Earth, he truly became her ‘father’; therefore that all-supporting bearer of beings came to be known by the name Pṛthivī.
Sage Parāśara (narrating to Maitreya)
Speaker: Parasara
Teaching: Historical
Quality: revealing
Concept: True ‘fatherhood’ is defined by prāṇa-pradāna—giving life and sustenance—extending guardianship to the very Earth.
Vedantic Theme: Dharma
Application: Measure leadership and care by the capacity to sustain life—protect ecosystems, ensure food security, and nurture dependents.
Vishishtadvaita: Earth as a real, supported locus for embodied souls; divine order sanctifies material support (anna) as spiritually meaningful service.
Dharma Exemplar: pitr̥-bhāva (protective, life-giving guardianship)
Key Kings: Pṛthu
Lakshmi Presence: Bhumi
This verse presents Pṛthu as the life-giving protector of the Earth—so central that the Earth receives the name Pṛthivī from him, marking him as an ideal king whose rule sustains universal order.
Parāśara explains it through etymological narrative: because Pṛthu ‘gave life’ (prāṇa-pradāna) to the Earth and became her father, she is called Pṛthivī.
Even when Vishnu is not named in the verse, the Purana frames righteous kingship as participation in Vishnu’s sustaining power—preservation through dharma—making worldly sovereignty meaningful only when aligned with the Supreme Preserver.
