ekadā sūtamāyāṃtaṃ dṛṣṭvā taṃ śaunakādayaḥ | paraṃ harṣaṃ samāviṣṭāḥ papurnetraiḥ sucetasā | citrāḥ śrotuṃ kathāstatra parivavrustapasvinaḥ
Once, seeing the Sūta approaching, the sages led by Śaunaka were filled with great joy and ‘drank him in’ with their eyes, attentive and composed. Eager to hear wondrous narratives, those ascetics gathered around him there.
Narrator
Tirtha: Naimiṣāraṇya
Type: kshetra
Listener: Śaunaka and sages
Scene: A forest hermitage assembly: Śaunaka and sages rise with joy as Sūta arrives; their eyes fixed lovingly, they encircle him, eager for wondrous stories.
Reverent listening to Purāṇic kathā in the company of sages is portrayed as a noble, joy-giving spiritual pursuit.
The setting continues to be Naimiṣāraṇya, though the verse emphasizes the assembly rather than a specific tīrtha act.
No explicit rite is prescribed; the implied observance is kathā-śravaṇa (listening to sacred discourse).
