पापानामिव संघातैः किं मे दुष्टैर्जडासुभिः । देहेन चातिभारेण विना भर्त्रा महात्मना
pāpānāmiva saṃghātaiḥ kiṃ me duṣṭairjaḍāsubhiḥ | dehena cātibhāreṇa vinā bhartrā mahātmanā
“What use is this body to me—wretched and lifeless—like a heap of sins, a crushing burden, when I am without my great-souled husband?”
The wife (Madayantī, lamenting)
Scene: The woman looks at her own body with despair, shoulders slumped, ornaments dulled; she gestures toward her heart as if emptied without her husband; the atmosphere is heavy, almost still.
Attachment becomes a test of dharma: the verse portrays the depth of conjugal fidelity and the suffering caused by adharma.
