Śravaṇa–Kīrtana–Manana: Definitions and Hierarchy of Śaiva Sādhanā (श्रवणकीर्तनमनन-निरूपणम्)
gītātmanā śrutipadena ca bhāṣayā vā śaṃbhupratāpaguṇarūpavilāsanāmnām | vācā sphuṭaṃ tu rasavatstavanaṃ yadasya tatkīrtanaṃ bhavati sādhanamatra madhyam
Whether through song, through Vedic utterance, or through ordinary speech—when one clearly and with devotional relish praises Śambhu’s majesty, virtues, forms, sportive manifestations, and sacred names, that praise becomes kīrtana. In this discipline, it is taught as the ‘middle’ (madhyama) means of spiritual practice.
Suta Goswami (narrating Shiva’s modes of worship to the sages at Naimisharanya)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Jyotirlinga: Viśvanātha
Sthala Purana: Kāśī’s tradition strongly privileges nāma-kīrtana and stuti as accessible means; this verse’s allowance of song, Vedic recitation, or common speech reflects the kṣetra-ideal that Śiva’s praise is efficacious across registers when done with rasa (devotional relish).
Significance: Legitimizes multiple modes of kīrtana (gīta/śruti/bhāṣā) as a ‘madhyama’ sādhana—bridging external worship and internal contemplation—leading to grace.
Type: stotra
Role: nurturing
Offering: pushpa
It defines kīrtana as clear, heartfelt glorification of Śiva’s names, qualities, forms, and divine play—an effective madhyama sādhana that refines speech (vāk), concentrates the mind, and ripens devotion toward Pati (Śiva).
By praising Śiva’s ‘names and forms’ (nāmnām, rūpa), the verse supports Saguna-upāsanā: one may worship the Liṅga outwardly while simultaneously performing kīrtana that anchors devotion and remembrance in a tangible focus.
Practice kīrtana daily—singing or reciting Śiva-stotras and the Panchākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) with clear pronunciation and devotional feeling; it can accompany Liṅga-pūjā with offerings like bhasma and bilva leaves.
